Gas Transmission Rate(GTR),also called gas permeability, is the ability of a barrier material to allow gases (O2, N2, CO2 etc.) to permeate through it in a specific time. Gas permeability may vary with temperature, humidity, pressure and speicmen thickness.

There are many different industries where gas permeation control is very important. Gas sensitive foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals are put in packaging with controlled gas transmission to achieve the safety and shelf life. Also clothing industries, building materials industries both need to control the gas permeation barrier properties.

There are various techniques to measure gas(O2, N2, CO2 etc.),and the popular test method including two type like Coulometry and pressure-difference method, comply to international testing standard ASTM ASTM D3985 ASTM F1927 ASTMD1434.
